Headline: Some people do not notice a dancing gorilla

Results

50% of observers were unaware of the gorilla. This figure was even greater in the 'difficult' task condition.

Method

Participants were asked to view a short video clip of a team of basketball players. Individuals in the 'easy task' were asked to count the number of passes made by one of the teams, and those in the 'difficult' task were asked to keep separate count of bounce and aerial passes.

A task-irrelevant unexpected ‘Gorilla’ walked through the playing space thumping his chest for nine seconds. After watching the video clips participants were asked if they saw anything unusual.

This paper is a fantastic demonstration of how little we perceive... it's shocking!

Does this study account for inattentional amnesia (Wolfe, 1999)?
